OVERVIEW
The Schools on Solar concept is to reduce energy cost and dependency on foreign oil through the use of clean renewable energy supplied by the sun. The intent is to install solar systems in schools capable of supplying sufficient energy to power an individual classroom (one system at a time).
PILOT PROJECT
The initial 2.8kW solar array was installed at Northwest Rankin Middle School in April 2009. It is estimated this 16 panel solar array will supply all the energy required for one typical classroom for the next 30 years. The system should generate 151 megawatts of environmentally clean energy over its lifetime. This is equivalent to powering 4,832 homes for a day.
It will reduce carbon emissions by app. 259,000 pounds which is an equivalent offset to planting 3,024 tress, not driving 7,757 cars for a day, or not consuming 13,351 gallons of gas.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
Array Donation – $12.750.00 -Your donation will power a typical classroom for the next 30 years.
Multiple Panel Donation - $4,250.00- A donation of $4,250.00 will purchase a 4 panel system, and produce 37.6 megawatts of energy over 30 years. Panel Donation - $1,063.00 – Your donation will produce app. 9.4 megawatts of energy over the next 30 years with a carbon offset of app. 16,200 pounds.
Scholarship Donation - Schools on Solar currently provides 2 scholarships per year for teachers to attend Solar Energy International's Teacher Training Program. Please consider assisting at any level in this important link to educating our children in the future of solar energy. Website Donation - The SchoolsonSolar website provides information, education and discussion for issues in alternative energy and regulations. Our goal is to promote solar discussion and energy use throughout Mississippi. Please consider assisting at any level to help provide this service to Mississippi. Donations should be made directly to the School District. The Rankin County School District is the lead district in implementation of this program.
